Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has called on the international community to strengthen multilateral cooperation on climate resilience to mobilize the resources developing nations need to achieve their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Speaking at the Climate Security Dialogue on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Wednesday (September 23), Indonesian Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono said Jakarta views climate resilience as far more than just an environmental issue.
He emphasized that climate resilience intrinsically links to a nation's capacity to protect its people, safeguard livelihoods, and maintain economic stability amid shocks triggered by climate crises.
Strengthening national resilience, he noted, is vital to addressing the compounding risks of climate change and ecosystem degradation.
"Strengthening adaptation must be carried out by building cross-sectoral resilience, including in food, water, and energy," Sugiono said in a statement released here on Thursday (September 24) by the Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry.
This comprehensive approach is reflected in Indonesia's Second NDC document, which prioritizes food, water, and energy security, alongside a transition to clean energy, as vital components of its national climate response.
However, Sugiono stressed that these national initiatives require robust backing from the international community.
He noted that developing nations urgently need access to concessional financing, technology transfers, capacity building, and foreign investment to effectively assess risks and enhance their climate preparedness.
The Climate Security Dialogue serves as a high-level forum for global leaders to exchange best practices and discuss practical steps for mitigating the threats of climate change and ecosystem degradation.
Sugiono is scheduled to deliver Indonesia's national statement during the UNGA General Debate on Saturday afternoon (September 26).
During his address, he is expected to outline Indonesia's broader strategic perspectives on global resilience, international peace and security, Palestinian statehood, UN reform, and amplifying the voice of the Global South.
